Table of Contents / Nội Dung Chính

RECAP

1) Studying GMAT is interesting.

–> S = Studying GMAT + V = is

(Verb-ing phrase làm chủ ngữ số ít)

2) Round the corner came the postman.

–> S = the postman + V = came

(Round the corner là cụm giới từ không đủ tư cách làm S nên ta có cấu trúc đảo)

3) . That she worked hard for the whole term pleased her parents.

–> Trong trường hợp that+clause như thế này, main subject sẽ là that+clause luôn là chủ ngữ số ít. Khi that+clause đứng riêng lẻ sẽ không tạo thành nghĩa hoàn chỉnh. Chủ ngữ này nhận Verb số ít.

–> Main S = That she worked hard for the whole term + Main V = pleased

(Clause ở sau that có S = she + V = worked)

–> Tạm dịch: Việc cô ấy học chăm chỉ cả học kì làm ba mẹ cô ấy hài lòng.

Trong các câu hỏi ví dụ dưới đây, thay vì giải chi tiết để đưa ra đáp án đúng, mình chỉ phân tích các đáp án có chứa chủ ngữ đặc biệt và hoặc dễ gây bối rối cho người dự thi.

Bài tập xác định các loại chủ ngữ đặc biệt

Câu 1

Child development specialists believe that, in confining babies much of the time to strollers, high chairs, playpens, and walkers, muscle development can be inhibited.

(A) that, in confining babies much of the time to strollers, high chairs, playpens, and walkers, muscle development can be inhibited

  • Đọc câu gốc ta vẫn hiểu intended meaning, chỉ là cách diễn đạt in confining babies much of the time to strollers, high chairs, playpens, and walkers không biết đã bổ nghĩa cho cái gì. Ta xem liệu có câu nào khác diễn đạt tốt hơ

(C) that confining babies much of the time to strollers, high chairs, playpens, and walkers can inhibit muscle development

  • S = confining … (V-ing phrase) nhận V = can inhibit
  • Lần này, ta hiểu rõ nghĩa Việc giữ các em bé phần lớn thời gian trong các xe đẩy, ghế cao, cũi lồng và xe tập đi có thể làm hạn chế phát triển cơ bắp (của trẻ). (Diễn đạt chủ động, S-V makes sense)

(E) that strollers, high chairs, playpens, and walkers can, if babies are confined to the much of the time, result in muscle development being inhibited

  • Ở câu này, S = strollers, high chairs, playpens, and walkers nhận V = can result in dẫn tới việc S-V doesn’t make sense. Rõ ràng, xe đẩy, ghế cao, cũi lng và xe tp đi không dẫn tới việc hạn chế phát triển cơ bắp mà phải là việc confining babies to … mới là doer thật sự.

Vy đáp án là câu C

Câu 2

Cajuns speak a dialect brought to southern Louisiana by the 4,000 Acadians who migrated there in 1755; their language is basically seventeenth-century French to which has been added English, Spanish, and Italian words.

Errors:

Ở câu gốc, ta cần xác định rõ các cặp SV như sau:

their language is basically seventeenth-century French

to which has been added English, Spanish, and Italian words.

  • Trong relative clause to which …. words,S = English, Spanish, and Italian words (số nhiều) nhận V = has been added (số ít)

(cấu trúc đảo vì to which không đủ tư cách làm S vì nó đang là preposition phrase)

(A) to which has been added English, Spanish, and Italian words

  • Lỗi S-V không phù hợp về số lượng

(C) to which English, Spanish, and Italian words have been added

  • Lần này V = have been added (số nhiều) đúng
  • Các bạn cũng nên hình dung, nếu tách relative clause này ra làm 1 câu riêng lẻ, nó sẽ trông như sau:

–> English, Spanish, and Italian words have been added to French.

Vậy đáp án đúng là C.

Câu 3

The Achaemenid empire of Persia reached the Indus Valley in the fifth century B.C., bringing the Aramaic script with it, from which was derived both northern and southern India alphabets.

Errors:

  • from which thì whichcần bổ nghĩa cho the Aramaic script nên cần đứng gần nhau nhất có thể.
  • Phân tích S-V trong relative clause như sau:

from which was derived both northern and southern India alphabets.

  • Trong relative clause này, S = both northern and southern India alphabets (số nhiều) nhận V = was derived (số ít)

(cấu trúc đảo vì from which không đủ tư cách làm S vì nó đang là preposition phrase)

(A) the Aramaic script with it, from which was derived both northern and

  • Lỗi Modifier và lỗi S-V không phù hợp về số lượng

(C) with it the Aramaic script, from which derive both the northern and the

  • Sửa được lỗi Modifier và lỗi S-V agreement
  • Lần này, V = derive (số nhiều) đúng

(D) with it the Aramaic script, from which derives both northern and

  • Sửa được lỗi Modifier nhưng V = derives (số ít) sai

Vậy đáp án đúng là C.

Câu 4

A ruined structure found at Aqaba, Jordan, was probably a church as indicated in its eastward orientation and by its overall plan, as well as artifacts, such as glass-oil lamp fragments, found at the site.

Errors:

  • . Intended meaning:

A ruined structure was probably a church

as indicated in its eastward orientation and by its overall plan, as well as artifacts. (được chỉ ra bởi A and B as well as C)

  • Cách sử dụng as well as là đúng (complete list as well as complete list) nhưng có lỗi về parallelism –> Cần dùng BY A and B as well as BY C chẳng hạn)
  • indicated + by

(A) A ruined structure found at Aqaba, Jordan, was probably a church as indicated in its eastward orientation and by its overall plan, as well as

  • Lỗi như phân tích trên.

(C) Indicating that a ruined structure found at Aqaba, Jordan, was probably a church were its eastward orientation and overall plan, but also the

  • Trong câu này, S = Indicating that a ruined structure found at Aqaba, Jordan, was probably a church (V-ing phrase số ít) nhận V = were (số nhiều) nên S-V không phù hợp về số lượng
  • Lưu ý, ở đây indicating + that nên phía sau that phải có 1 clause hoàn chỉnh để diễn đạt ý trước khi Main V (were) xuất hiện.

–> indicating that a ruined structure found at Aqaba, Jordan, was probably a church

(E) That a ruined structure found at Aqaba, Jordan, was probably a church is indicated by its eastward orientation and overall plan, as well as by the

  • Lần này, S = That a ruined structure found at Aqaba, Jordan, was probably a church (that+clause làm chủ ngữ số ít) nhận V = is indicated (số ít) đúng.
  • Lưu ý, hễ thấy thatđứng đầu câu thì có khả năng that+clause đang làm chủ ngữ, nên sau that là 1 clause hoàn chỉnh trước khi Main V (is indicated) xuất hiện.

Vậy đáp án đúng là E.

Câu 5

That educators have not anticipated the impact of microcomputer technology can hardly be said that it is their fault: Alvin Toffler, one of the most prominent students of the future, did not even mention microcomputers in Future Shock, published in 1970.

Errors:

  • S = That educators have not anticipated the impact of microcomputer technology (that+clause làm S số ít) nhận V = can hardly be said (phù hợp số lượng)
  • Idiom:

It is/was said THAT + CLAUSE (right)

sb/sth BE said TO BE ADJ (right)

sb/sth is/was said THAT + CLAUSE (wrong)

  • Intended meaning: Việc educators have not anticipated the impact of microcomputer technologykhó có thể được nói là lỗi của họ (nói chung educators).

–> Tuy nhiên cách viết này dài dòng và không đúng IDIOM

(A) That educators have not anticipated the impact of microcomputer technology can hardly be said that it is their fault

  • Lỗi Idiom: sth BE said THAT + CLAUSE
  • Lưu ý, câu này có thể đúng nếu viết lại như sau: That educators have not anticipated the impact of microcomputer technology can hardly be said TO BE THEIR FAULT.

(B ) That educators have not anticipated the impact of microcomputer technology can hardly be said to be at fault

  • Lần này, nghĩa thay đổi thành Việc …. to be at fault (wrong)–> Sai intended meaning

(C) It can hardly be said that it is the fault of educators who have not anticipated the impact of microcomputer technology

  • Nhắc lại intended meaning: tập trung vào educators nói chung
  • Câu C có thay đổi nghĩa khi sử dụng Noun + WHO (without comma). Lúc này, lỗi chỉ thuộc về chính xác nhóm người không anticipated the impact of microcomputer technology.

(D) It can hardly be said that educators are at fault for not anticipating the impact of microcomputer technology

  • Đúng intended meaning
  • Sử dụng chủ từ giả It can hardly be said that

Vậy đáp án đúng là D.
